How do I prepare my cup for a clear reading?
- Brew Turkish or Arabic coffee, finely ground and unfiltered: only grounds that settle can draw shapes. Filter, instant and capsule coffee leave nothing to read.
- Drink slowly from one side, leaving a little coffee over the grounds, with your question in mind.
- Swirl that last sip gently three times, then turn the cup over onto its saucer in one move.
- Let it rest until the cup cools and the grounds run and dry into their shapes, five to ten minutes.
- Photograph the inside from directly above, in daylight, with the whole rim in frame; next you will line up the circle and mark the handle.

Before you photograph it
- Turn the cup.Leave a little sediment, cover it with the saucer, turn it over, and wait until the cup is cool to the touch. Reading it warm smears the shapes.
- Daylight, from the side.Not a flash, and not with your own shadow across the cup. The whole reading depends on telling grounds from porcelain.
- Straight down.Photograph the inside of the cup looking into it rather than across it; you will line the circle up with it next.
- Mark the handle.In this tradition the handle is you — your side of the cup, your house, what is already in your hands. The half away from it is other people and elsewhere. After the photo you turn the marker to where the handle is, and every mark is read from there.

What this tool does, exactly
It measures. Your photograph is converted to a single channel by luminance, split into grounds and porcelain by Otsu's method, and every connected deposit inside the circle is found and measured — its area, its position on a clock face with the handle at six, how elongated it is and which way its long axis points. Those numbers are facts about your photograph: the same picture with the same circle and handle mark produces the same ones (a browser may decode one file very slightly differently).
The meanings are a tradition, not a result, and the tool says which is which: every passage shows what was measured underneath what it means. If your cup is too dark, too pale or nearly empty, it tells you that and how to fix the photograph rather than inventing a reading for it.
